Napalm Stars

Song Story:

War is never a safe business. When propaganda machine draws an exaggerated enemy, you are ready to do anything to defeat it. After suffering more losses than expected and crossing many moral boundaries than believed, the Allied generals had decided on hastening the end of the war by taking more drastic measures to destroy the Reich’s military machine. Despite its civilian characteristics, Dresden had developed as an industrial centre for supplying Hitler’s German military production and providing transport links. A decision had been taken to sacrifice the city’s cultural values and to experiment if the entire city could be burned to the ground. A new highly flammable substance was invented, abbreviated as “Napalm”, to serve the purposes of an operation which goes in the moral history of war as a war crime. It was used for the first time over Dresden.

Goebbels’s propaganda took advantage of the success of the operation and exaggerated the number of civilian casualties tenfold; this resulted in a massive worldwide discontent and condemnation of the bombings. After the end of the war, the aviation was not officially honoured for its contribution to the victory. This happened decades later, and with no fuss.

Song Lyrics:

New morning silence
Overlaps the world
Fiery butterflies
Blinding fireworks
The flames are falling
Bomb after bomb
Buildings are rolling
The sirens call…

No need to hunt today
Don’t hurry to prevail
Senseless is to stay
Turn the onrush away

Dresden is burning now
This bright napalm night
Eyes of ruins and fire
Watch the awful war crime

The shelter’s worthless
Screams over squares
The torch of culture
Gleams deadly fair
The Flying Fortresses
Dropped fires back
Here they left below
Grey heaps of wrecks

No need to hunt today
Don’t hurry to prevail
Senseless is to stay
Turn the onrush away

Dresden is burning now
This bright napalm night
Eyes of ruins and fire
Watch the awful war crime

Now we hope the war to end
And we cannot understand
The frontlines are away
The stars fell down today!

We hope the war to end
We cannot understand
The frontlines are away
The stars fell down today!

No need to hunt today
Don’t hurry to prevail
Senseless is to stay
Turn the onrush away

Dresden is burning now
This bright napalm night
Eyes of ruins and fire
Watch the awful war crime
