Twice Occupied

Song Story:

The Forest Brothers were Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian partisans who waged guerrilla warfare against Russian occupation of the Baltic States during WWII. The Baltics were occupied once according to the Non-Aggression Pact between the Third Reich and the Soviet Union. For the second time they were overran by the Red Army. The song is inspired by the Latvian Forest Brothers, but it is devoted to all resistance movements. Similar resistance groups fought against the Soviet rule in Bulgaria, Poland, Romania and Western Ukraine.

Song Lyrics:

Green are the woods ahead
We follow no commands
Endless march for days
No food and no demands

How many times we’ve read the letters
How many times we’ve dreamed for home
How many thoughts of what we’ve left there
How many empty secret hopes

Minutes are passing by
With the sounds of the war
We shoot or we die
Thru trees and railways
Here comes the next watch
Guns are firing the world
We live for the new touch
This death or this birth

Black is the blood in my feet
The wounds of my friends
Fierce bullets whistle
So cold remain my hands

How many times we’ve read the letters
How many times we’ve dreamed for home
How many thoughts of what we’ve left there
How many empty secret hopes

Minutes are passing by
With the sounds of the war
We shoot or we die
Thru trees and railways
Here comes the next watch
Guns are firing the world
We live for the new touch
This death or this birth!

Deaf is the earth this spring
By weapons and tanks
Blitzkrieg’ bells ring
With the noise of the plains

How many times we’ve read the letters
How many times we’ve dreamed for home
How many thoughts of what we’ve left there
How many empty secret hopes
:
Minutes are passing by
With the sounds of the war
We shoot or we die
Thru trees and railways
Here comes the next watch
Guns are firing the world
We live for the new touch
This death or this birth

A brotherhood in forest light
Days and nights - eternal run
For the Baltics we still fight
Under the dust of the firing guns
