Stormtalkers

Song Story:

Native American code talkers were deployed by the US Marine Corps to serve in the standard communication units of the Pacific theatre. 429 Navajo speakers were specially recruited during WWII. They transmitted secret tactical messages and improved the speed of encryption in frontline operations. The Navajo radio code comprised words selected from their native language and applied to military terms. Many Navajo were enlisted shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbour and contributed to the war effort. The Navajo code is the only spoken military code never to have been deciphered.

Song Lyrics:

Left without their land
In reservation they stand
Misunderstood they clance
Their customs are defense

Four hundred twenty one
On call to duty run
Navajo stay in contact
Report on time the next attack

Serve with pride in the Marines
Navajo’s talking to the wind
High honor, blizzard is manific
Navajos code won the Pacific

Upper hand they get by fire
The encryption they enquire
A code with overwhelming power
Devalued live in hours

Serve with pride in the Marines
Navajo’s talking to the wind
High honor, blizzard is magnific
Navajos cod won the Pacific

From battalion to battalion
And from ship to ship another
Secret code is a hanging talion
Memories we have to gather
