Wolfsrudel

Song Story:

Shadows fell over Atlantic. The German U-boats perfected their wolfpack tactics. Surfacing at night, they attacked merchant ships from all directions even from inside the convoy. During the first four patrols of U-99, the submariner Captain Otto Kretchmer commenced attacks on convoys using only one torpedo per ship. Kretchmer’s innovation was to execute the night surface attacks inside the convoy. In October 1940, a wolfpack attacked and devastated convoy SC-7. The convoy lost 20 ships of which 7 fell to Kretchmer’s U-99. Convoy HX-79 also suffered heavy losses on the next day: 34 ships were lost in hours. These attacks made 18th and 19th October the worst days for shipping losses in the entire Atlantic campaign.

Song Lyrics:

Under the surface of liquid gold
Wolves are hunting the convoy
Silence conquers the horizon
Torpedoes firing ships arisen

By surprise a fierce attack
U-boats bite and turn back
To the depths of North Atlantic
Sleeping horror of battles frantic

Withdraw by day, attack by night,
More wolves arrive in patrol lines…
October darkness full of chaos
34 ships sunk in 48 hours

The Kriegsmarine wolfpack
Rises on the scarlet waves
Seven U-boats attack
Merchant vessels chase

Bloody tears, confusion red
Deep down conceals the threat
Terrifies so many nations
Shadower reports locations

In the center of SC 7 convoy
U-99 at blank range destroys
Then follows HX 79
The fate is gone, a deadline

Inside the convoy appears the sound
Spreading fire – fear all around

Withdraw by day, attack by night,
More wolves arrive in patrol lines…
October darkness full of chaos
34 ships sunk in 48 hours

The Kriegsmarine wolfpack
Rises on the scarlet waves
Seven U-boats attack
Merchant vessels chase...
